According to reports, the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai sentenced Director Ram Gopal Varma to three months of basic imprisonment in a case of cheque bounce on Tuesday. In a report published by Telangana Today, the Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant in his name after hearing the case for seven years.
Ram Gopal Varma is found guilty of a check fraud case.
RGV was convicted of cheque dishonor under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which “penalizes cheque dishonor due to insufficient funds or exceeding the account’s arranged amount,” according to the publication. The director is also required to pay the complainant ₹3.75 lakh as compensation. Failure to pay the sum within three months will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
Shree, a company, lodged a cheque bounce case against RGV’s firm in 2018 through Maheshchandra Mishra. The director was granted bail in June 2022 after submitting a ₹5000 security deposit and a personal surety. According to reports, the magistrate who administered the sentence clarified that there would be no “set-off” under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as RGV was “not in custody during the trial.”
The director was reportedly absent from the hearing, and a comprehensive decision is anticipated. Nevertheless, he responded to the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I would like to clarify that the news regarding me and the Andheri court pertains to a seven-year-old case involving a sum of ₹2,38,000, which pertains to my former employee.” My advocates are currently addressing the matter. I am unable to provide any additional information at this time, as the matter is currently in court.
